Liberty Center apartment project gets another year as $76M expansion awaits hotel tenant

A planned 264-unit, $76.2 million apartment addition at Liberty Center, a multiuse community hub on the border of Liberty and West Chester townships in Butler County, has another year to get moving.

Liberty Township trustees voted June 2 to extend the zoning approval for the second phase of the luxury apartment project, which is planned for a nearly 4.7-acre site near Ford’s Garage and originally approved in June 2023. The massive mixed-use development’s first phase, which opened in 2015, included 238 apartments.

The multifamily expansion project is paired with a future hotel, which was part of the June 2023 approval that was set to expire this year. John Taylor, senior general manager of Liberty Center, said the hotel is “part of the property’s future plans,” though there is not a specific timeline he can share at this point.

The project has state support. In January 2025, the project received a $7.6 million Ohio Transformational Mixed-Use Development, or TMUD, tax credit.

“Our current focus is on completing a comprehensive master plan and ensuring that any next steps are thoughtful, coordinated and aligned with the needs of the property, our tenants, key stakeholders and the surrounding community,” Taylor said.
