Miami University has known for quite some time it needed a replacement for 57-year-old Millett Hall. The plans it has firmed up this year won’t just replace it but create facilities and development that will benefit its athletic teams plus students and the surrounding region.

Miami intends to build a 6,500-seat arena at the northeast corner of the busy intersection of U.S. Route 27 and state Route 73 on a 12-acre site that’s now Cook Field in the heart of Oxford, right in the middle of campus. That’s the centerpiece of its estimated $233 million project. The plans also include a hotel and conference center.

Miami leaders see the project as an engine of economic development in the surrounding region.

“We want to think about how this can continue to energize and build the economy of the Oxford and greater Butler County area,” Durojaiye said. “I think this will be one of the anchors that really drives interest, attraction, economic development to that area and our region.”
