The city of Hamilton is working with a local real estate development company on the adaptive reuse of a building steeped in history, one of several projects expected to transform the city’s urban core in the years to come.
The Beckett Paper Mill, a 128,415-square-foot vacant industrial building that dates from the 1880s, occupies several acres on the west side of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard about a quarter mile north of High Street in downtown Hamilton.
The Ohio Department of Development last week awarded the Butler County Land Bank a $2.18 million Brownfield Remediation Program grant award to get the Beckett Mill project started.

Joshua Smith, CEO of the Butler County Finance Authority and former long-time Hamilton city manager, praised the Beckett Mill demolition grant, as well as a demolition grant awarded in the same round for the Towne Mall site in Middletown.
“These grants are critical to removing obsolete and underutilized structures, paving the way for transformational redevelopment,” Smith told the Courier in an emailed statement. “Clearing these sites not only brings immediate visual and economic vibrancy to our communities – it also positions them for new investment that boosts sales, property, and income tax revenues.”
