Butler County’s port authority has a new way to raise and deploy money for real estate projects and business expansions.

The Butler County Finance Authority, a port authority under Ohio law, announced Aug. 25 that its new affiliate, the Southwest Ohio Improvement Fund, is officially certified by the U.S. Treasury Department as a Community Development Entity, or CDE.

The certification is a watershed moment for the Finance Authority, whose ongoing transformation is key to Butler County’s downtown revitalization efforts, small business growth and economic expansion.

“Obviously we are, at our core, a port authority,” Joshua Smith, CEO of the Finance Authority, told the Business Courier. “But we wanted to be nimble enough that we’re more than that. Rather than just leaning on traditional port powers, we wanted to be an all-inclusive economic development and real estate agency. We wanted to be seen as a different type of port authority. Earning the CDE status is certainly a big part of that.”
